Scooter Safety Tips
- Wear a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads
every time you ride. In many areas, helmets
are required by law. While wrist
guards are a good idea for other activities
such as skating, they may make it more
difficult to grip the handles and steer a
scooter.
- Children under the age of 12 should not
ride motorized scooters.
- Avoid gravel and uneven pavement, which
can cause falls. Be on the lookout for
unexpected bumps and curbs, which cause many
accidents. Smooth, paved surfaces such
as bike paths are the best places for
younger riders to use scooters.
- Don’t ride in a vehicle’s blind spot.
Maintain plenty of space between your
scooter and motor vehicles.
- Observe speed limits and travel at a
speed appropriate to the conditions.
- Avoid riding scooters at night.
Wear bright or reflective clothing and use a
headlight and flashing rear light when
riding in dim lighting conditions.
- Wear sturdy shoes. Injuries to the
foot or ankle are commonly associated with
scooters.
- Owners of scooters should check with
local authorities for local laws regarding
scooters.
