Seattle Car Accidents

The numbers are staggering -- Washington State had 128,888 motor vehicle accidents in 2007, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. These accidents, most of which involved passenger cars, resulted in 59,065 injuries -- and 568 fatalities. While there has been an overall decline in traffic fatalities since 1980, the fact is that one in every 22 Washington State residents was involved in a traffic accident in 2007.

If you have been injured in a car accident in Seattle or the surrounding communities, don’t be just another statistic. Contact Kenneth Selander, Jr. toll-free at 1-866-681-0002 or submit an online contact form. We handle cases across Washington State, including Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Edmonds, Mercer Island, Sammamish, Renton, Lynnwood, Federal Way, Burien, Everett, Auburn, Kent, Issaquah and Tacoma.

In the state of Washington, the highest number of car accidents occurs:

  • During the months of December and January.
  • Between the hours of 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
  • As the result of a rear-end collision (cars traveling in the same direction, one stopped and one moving, or both moving).
  • Because at least one driver was speeding.
  • Among drivers 16-25 years of age.

The sad fact is that most serious accidents could have been prevented if the at-fault motorist had been paying more attention to driving conditions and obeying traffic laws. Statistics from the Department of Transportation clearly illustrate the problem. In almost all instances, a rear-end collision is the fault of the driver in the rear car. In 2007, there were more than 35,000 rear-end collisions in Washington, including situations where the front car was stopped or where both cars were moving.

You can limit your own risk of being involved in an accident by following posted speed limits and paying attention to the road, but you can’t control the negligent conduct of other motorists. Common driver behaviors that lead to serious car accidents such as rear-end collisions are:

  • Speeding.
  • Driving while distracted (for example, talking on the phone).
  • Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
  • Not obeying traffic laws.

While all of these dangerous behaviors are easily avoidable, many drivers choose to engage in them every day. When the negligent behavior of another driver puts you in the middle of a serious wreck -- and leaves you with serious injuries -- you need an experienced car accident attorney to help you.
