Biography
Kenneth Selander, Jr.

I grew up in Seattle and live in Seward Park with my wife, Jeannie O’Brien, and daughter, Cleo. After graduating from Highline High School in Burien, I attended Stanford University (’76 grad with stops at Berkeley and George Washington University along the way), and the University of Washington School of Law. I have been practicing law for over 20 years and now focus exclusively on personal injury claims and insurance law matters. Admitted to the Washington State Bar Association in 1985, I am also a member of the trial lawyer groups the Washington State Association for Justice and the American Association for Justice.
The Northwest affords great opportunities to be active outdoors, and I try to immerse myself in our natural surroundings. In the summer, I enjoy wake-boarding, wake-surfing, swimming or doing just about anything in or on the water. In the winter, I love snow-boarding and being outdoors in the mountains. Bicycling and hiking are other pursuits I try to pursue regularly, and I often think about committing myself to yoga as I age.
My true passion in life is music. My mother raised a musical family, and I started playing the drums at an early age (I even played professionally briefly years ago). I hope to play in a band again, or at least jam regularly, so I can enjoy the creativity, communication and camaraderie only music affords. Jazz, fusion, rock and contemporary music are my favorites.
My greatest thrill this past year was coaching my daughter’s 5th grade basketball team. (I played guard for Highline High School in the early 70’s). Although I no longer play, basketball remains my favorite sport. The chance to work with young girls on their skills, attitudes, and teamwork during my rookie year as a coach was a surreal mix of euphoria, frustration, disappointment, and satisfaction.
I’ve also learned that sports and law share much in common. Both reward a strong work ethic, determination, integrity, and preparation. In law, these positive attributes are critical not only for the success of the attorney, but for the people represented as well. Those possessing respected values succeed because the law, at its core, is nothing more than a system of human beings making decisions and judgments about others.
